Fflint, Hanmer

Manslaughter of Charles Paine, Whitchurch, co. Salop, butcher, following a fight. Between twenty and thirty people met at an inn called the London Apprentice to see a cock fight. When the 'cocking' ended, some entered the inn. The deceased, 'a quarrelsome man and fond of fighting' and intoxicated put down a wager to fight George Harding who refused to drink with him as he had not paid his way at Whitchurch market. As George Harding was small of stature, the prisoner, a newcomer to the area fought in his place. mwy
