Murder of Jacob Stanley, whose head had been 'dreadfully mangled' with an axe. The deceased, an uncle to the prosecutor, lived with the prisoner's brother. The prisoner had been confined in a madhouse known as the Hermitage in Shrewsbury, co. Salop, but had escaped a year before he committed the offencel He is described as 'a most dangerous man and not fit to be trusted' who was sometimes 'cool and rational but very frequently quite insane', murder being his principal topic. Indeed he talked of 'guillotining some of the principal people in the kingdom'. He worked on his brother's farm and committed the crime whilst the family attended Newtown fair. Prisoner apprehended at the Hermitage, Shrewsbury. Prisoner aged 26, also accused of another murder, see no. 6 in 4/196/7. One calendar records his age as being 31. mwy
