Murder of John Lewis by beating him on the head with an iron poker. Prisoner, the deceased and others had been drinking at the same inn. The deceased, and 'honest, industrious and particularly inoffensive' man was 'intoxicated - but not much so'. He had been 'employed to pay the men' as superintendent 'of some lime works' and had been given five promissory notes by his employer which he was to change into silver coins. When the deceased was found at the bottom of a lime kiln, the promissory notes/money were missing. Indicted twice for the fact - see no. 17 in 4/1016/8 and indicted also for a robbery from the deceased - see no. 21 in 4/1016/8. mwy
